Durham Region shoppers planning a trip to Winners, HomeSense or Marshalls on Labour Day should check their local store before leaving home.
Most Ontario locations operated by TJX Canada are expected to be closed on Monday, Sept. 7 for the statutory holiday, although some stores located inside shopping malls could operate under different holiday schedules.
That means Durham Labour Day shopping plans could vary depending on the individual store and shopping centre.
Most TJX stores expected to close Sept. 7
TJX Canada, which operates Winners, HomeSense and Marshalls, has said its Ontario stores will generally be closed in accordance with provincial holiday rules on Labour Day.
The holiday falls on Monday, Sept. 7 in 2026.
Ontario’s retail holiday rules require many retail businesses to close on Labour Day, although there are exemptions in certain circumstances.
Shoppers should therefore avoid assuming their local store will follow its normal Monday schedule.
Durham has several Winners, HomeSense and Marshalls stores
The three TJX brands have a significant presence across Durham Region.
Locations can be found in communities including Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa and Bowmanville.
Some properties contain more than one TJX brand, while others operate as standalone stores or as part of larger retail centres.
Because the rules and operating arrangements can vary by property, store-specific holiday hours are important.
A location’s regular Monday hours shown online may not necessarily reflect its Labour Day schedule.
Mall stores may be an exception
TJX Canada has indicated that some stores located inside shopping malls may remain open.
Whether an individual mall-based store opens can depend on the shopping centre’s holiday operating schedule and whether the property qualifies to open under applicable retail holiday rules.
For Durham residents, that means there could be exceptions to the general closure.
Anyone planning to shop at Winners, HomeSense or Marshalls should use the company’s store locator or check with the specific shopping centre before travelling.
Labour Day is a retail holiday in Ontario
Labour Day is one of Ontario’s designated retail business holidays.
Most affected retail establishments are required to close, although the province allows limited exemptions for certain types of businesses and designated areas.
The rules help explain why many large retailers close while restaurants, entertainment businesses, convenience stores and some other establishments may continue operating.
Separate employment rules also govern holiday pay and employees who are required or agree to work on public holidays.
Check before heading out
The most important advice for Durham Labour Day shopping is to confirm hours before visiting.
Most Winners, HomeSense and Marshalls locations are expected to be closed Monday, Sept. 7, but individual exceptions remain possible.
Shoppers should check the TJX store locator or the website for the shopping centre where their preferred store is located.
Regular hours are expected to resume after the Labour Day holiday unless a particular store posts a different schedule.
Checking ahead could save Durham residents an unnecessary drive on one of the final long weekends of summer.
