DCDSB whisper phones are helping primary students listen to their own reading during weekly UFLI practice, the Durham Catholic District School Board reported on October 14.

The board says the simple reading tool helps pupils concentrate on accuracy, phrasing and expression as they practise newly learned phonics skills.

Reading words and connected text aloud gives students regular opportunities to develop fluency. In its classroom update, DCDSB describes that practice as a way to help children become more automatic and confident readers.

The whisper-phone activity is part of the board’s account of primary reading instruction. The update describes how the tools are being used, rather than announcing a new test or publishing student achievement results.

DCDSB did not provide a count of participating classes or a timetable for distributing additional tools. No such figures are inferred here.

Details are attributed to the board’s October 14 classroom news update.
