Whitby October awareness days will include six month-long recognitions and seven dated observances, according to the Town’s 2026 list.
The month-long recognitions are German Heritage Month, Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month, Islamic Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Somali Heritage Month and Women’s History Month.
October observances listed by the Town
International Day of Older Persons falls on October 1, followed by International Wrongful Conviction Day on October 2.
The National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls is October 4. Energy Efficiency Day follows on October 7.
National Dental Care Day and World Mental Health Day both fall on October 10. International Day of the Girl Child is October 11, while Waste Reduction Week runs from October 19 through 25.
Whitby says Town Council and municipal staff recognize national and international observances as part of the community’s diversity, equity and inclusion work. The municipal notice also directs residents to Whitby’s online calendar for related virtual or in-person events.
The Town distinguishes observances formally proclaimed by council on its source page. Residents and organizations can apply separately for municipal flag raisings or proclamations.
