The Whitby Historical Society will receive $1,545 from Ontario to support its work preserving and sharing the town’s history.

Whitby MPP Lorne Coe announced the funding on October 17. It comes through the 2026–27 Heritage Organization Development Grant program.

Part of support for 180 organizations

The local allocation forms part of a $244,628 provincial investment supporting 180 heritage organizations across Ontario, according to Coe’s announcement.

The program helps eligible groups deliver public programs, exhibits, tours and educational initiatives that make heritage accessible to residents and visitors.

For Whitby, the grant supports the historical society’s heritage-related activities. The announcement does not set out a project-by-project spending plan, a new exhibit schedule or a date for a particular event.

Preserving Whitby’s local stories

Coe said the funding would help the society preserve local heritage so future generations can learn about the people, places and stories that shaped Whitby.

The provincial announcement describes heritage organizations as helping preserve local histories, celebrate cultural traditions and strengthen community connections. It does not announce a building purchase or a capital redevelopment for the Whitby Historical Society.

Durham Radio News also reported the local allocation on October 17. Its report identifies the same grant program and $1,545 amount as the MPP’s announcement.
